Chittenango Couple Enjoying Move to United Helpers Independent Senior Living

Paul and Ruth Coon have been living at United Helpers Independent Senior Living for more than two months. While they said, the decision to downsize from a large house to an apartment was not easy, it is one they are glad they made. From left, Paul, Jasper, and Ruth Coon.

CANTON – A couple from Chittenango who have moved to United Helpers Independent Senior Living with their dog Jasper have no regrets and are glad they made the move.

Paul and Ruth Coon made the move to be closer to Paul’s daughter Karen.

Mr. Coon said his daughter had been trying to get him to make the move since his first wife passed away several years ago. At that time he did a tour of the building and put in an application. He was even offered an apartment, but Mr. Coon said he just was not ready to move.

“It really is a tough decision to make,” he said.

Mr. Coon then met his future wife and did a tour of the property with her, even before they were married.

“We looked at it together last summer before we married,” he said. “I wanted to make sure she liked it and she did.”

Downsizing from a 1,900-square-foot home into an apartment was not easy, but Mr. and Mrs. Coon said they’re glad they decided to move. They’re especially glad for the opportunity to move in the summer, sparing them from another winter of having to deal with snow removal and everything else the winter months bring.

When asked if he had a favorite thing about living at United Helpers Independent Senior Living, Mr. Coon said he could not pick just one thing. “I like everything. We’re not in the city, but we’re close enough that we can get anything we want or need,” he said. “The meals are very good too.”

Mrs. Coons did not even hesitate when asked the same question. “The people,” she replied. “Everyone is so accommodating and friendly. The staff are all wonderful and Jen (Community Housing Manager Jennifer Dean) is the best. She’ll go out of her way to help anyone in the building.”

Chittenango, according to Google Maps is just over two and a half hours from Canton. “Prior to the move, I only saw Karen and her children a couple of times each year,” Mr. Coon said.

“Now you get to see them a couple of times each week,” his wife replied.

Mr. and Mrs. Coon both credit his daughter for convincing them to make the move, as well as introducing them to their “first friend” at their new home.

“If it wasn’t for Karen, we wouldn’t be here,” he said. “She goes to church with Janet Stitt, who lives in the building, and talked about how great it was.

The couple even came up for a picnic this summer prior to their official move. “We got to meet Janet and a few of the other people living here and right away, we knew we had made the right choice,” Mrs. Coon said.
